DO YOU REMEMBER HARRY HOWARD?

Harry's grandson, David Leslie, has been in touch and would like to hear from anyone who may have information about Harry's life.

Harry Howard died in 1954 and left two large plots of land on the south side of Benfleet Road to David's father, Harry Leslie (who later dropped the Howard name). These were subsequently sold for development. The one in the Lynton Road area was developed with bungalows and chalets and the other, opposite Shipwrights Drive, was sold in half acre plots. David remembers the latter land as "the Fields", with a large field, orchard and woodland, and the large houses built on the land included Howard Hall. This house was named after Harry Howard by the first owner, the Chairman of Benfleet Council, a friend of Harry's. This friendship developed when Harry lived near Benfleet Station, around 1901, when he was the Area Manager of Benskins.

Harry also owned property around St Mary's Church,
Prittlewell, as he was involved with the development of Prittlewell Chase and later Regency Green, which he owned. In 1908, he bought 5,6 and 7 Grosvenor Place, opposite the Kursaal, in Southend, and developed Leslie's Corner, which became the largest shell fish bar in England. He was never registered as the owner, or as living there and David has never been able to trace anything written about him.

Anything you may know, which may open other avenues to Harry Howard's life would be welcomed by David. His e-mail address is: 5dgleslie@supanet.com

DO YOU REMEMBER TURNPIKE COTTAGE IN HADLEIGH OR THE TOLL HOUSE IN THUNDERSLEY

Dr. James Prentice has been in touch. His grandfather, named James, was born at the toll house, on Hadleigh Road (now Rayleigh Road), Thundersley, near the Woodman's pub. Some 60 years later his father (also named James), then in his teens, lived at Turnpike Cottage, Benfleet Road, Hadleigh (near Victoria House roundabout).

James asks, "Does anyone have any further information about these two properties?" I have sent James some information obtained from local history books about Hadleigh and Thundersley but if you have any memories, photos or other information them James would be very interested to hear from you. His e-mail address is: jameshprentice@aol.com

DO YOU REMEMBER A HOUSE NAME "HAZELWOOD"

Mrs Vivienne Salmon left the following enquiry on the Guestbook:
"My great great grandfather was Stephen Harvey, farmer of Raylands Farm [later Raymonds Farm], Thundersley (1821-1904). Lavinia Harvey married Henry Yeaxlee and I believe their home was 'Hazelwood', London Road, Hadleigh. In 1950 the house was still standing and described as 'situated in a busy part of the main road'. Does anybody have a picture of 'Hazelwood'? Any information would be welcome."
If you can help Vivienne, her e-mail address is:
